CV - 2 pages or longer?

Updated: Oct 10

If I were a CEO I don’t think the selection panel would be over impressed with my two-page crammer. Clearly the number of pages will be determined by your seniority and years of experience. I read a CV for its content, not its length.

So the 2 page mantra does not and never did exist. Though the 2 sounds right-not too long and not too short.

If you are a student fresh from University with about six months work experience then you will use one or two pages to tell your story whilst if you have been working for ten years in different roles you will need to give a lot more detail.

If you are a consultant or architect where the nature of your technical expertise is determined by the nature of the projects you performed which may include a variety of assignments, then you should list a sample of the projects separately as an addendum, detailing their content, purpose and your role.

IT executives will list their experience of applications, and hardware and similar to the Architect you should list your most relevant projects and the key role you played.

Creative candidates with graphic design expertise should have a portfolio that supports their technical experience required for the role. The various projects, their content and your involvement can be separately listed under the title ‘Addendum of projects’. This allows the recruiter or employer to refer to the information on a selective basis if they consider it relevant and does not make the CV appear too elongated.

When I am reading a CV I am matching it to job description. I am looking for legibility, information and chronology.

You will have received much advice on how to write an amazing CV which will catch the attention of the recruiter.

I want to know your personal details, your education and qualifications and what work experience you have. I always read a CV from a positive perspective. I am hoping for a match which is why I need detail. Time is never an issue.

I have designed a logical CV layout in my jobcoach.org.uk coaching programme which is the result of having personally assessed over 100k.
